  • Amahl

    Owen Flood

    Owen Flood is a 9th grade student at Great Neck North High School. He is excited to play Amahl in Amahl and the Night Visitors. His past performances in school include Jack in Into The Woods, Charlie Brown in You’re a Good Man Charlie Brown, Adam in Freaky Friday, and Michael in Mary Poppins. Owen performed professionally at MoMA in NYC in 7th grade. He enjoys flying airplanes, skiing, and traveling. He would like to thank his family for supporting him on this journey. He appreciates you attending and hopes you enjoy the show.

    Ashley Kay Armstrong

    Praised for her “charismatic presence” (Chicago Classical Review) and “velvety voice” (Chicago Tribune), “powerhouse mezzo-soprano” Ashley Kay Armstrong’s “star power” (Picture this Post) “lights up the stage” (The Gazette) while winning over the hearts of audiences throughout the nation.

    During the 2021/2022 season, Ms. Armstrong makes her debut with North Shore Music Festival as The Mother in Amahl and the Night Visitors and returns to Opera Santa Barbara for her role debut as Hannah After in Kaminsky’s As One.

    Recent highlights include Olga in Eugene Onegin and Rebecca Nurse in The Crucible with Opera Santa Barbara, Kate Pinkerton in Madama Butterfly and Jenny Diver in The Threepenny Opera with Cedar Rapids Opera, Javotte in Manon with Opera Idaho. She was a 2020 Semi-Finalist for the American Prize in Art Song and is managed by Encompass Arts.

    Cooper daSilva

    Cooper daSilva is in the 7th grade at W.T. Clarke Middle School. He loves to sing, especially opera, and Amahl and the Night Visitors will be his first stage experience in this genre. He is humbled to have been selected to be the understudy for Amahl.

    In 6th grade, he was Lumiere in his middle school’s production of Beauty and The Beast. He is currently in rehearsals for Clarke High School’s production of The Sound of Music as Kurt Von Trapp. This year he became a member of MYO as part of their Nassau Concert Choir.

    He loves to swim, read, ride bikes, go to the movies and ride rollercoasters (the crazier the better). He’d like to thank his family for always supporting him in his passion for singing and performing. Thank you for coming to the show!

  • King Melchior

    Bernardo Medeiros

    Brazilian-American baritone Bernardo Medeiros holds a BM in Music Education from Oklahoma State University, a Master’s Degree and most recently a Performance Certificate from the University of Houston in May of 2020. During his time in Houston, Bernardo had the opportunity to perform several roles, most notably Horace Tabor in The Ballad of Baby Doe, David in L’amico Fritz, Count Almaviva in Le Nozze di Figaro and Capulet in Romeo et Juliette. In 2017, Bernardo participated as an Apprentice Artist at Opera in the Ozarks, where he portrayed the titular role in Le nozze di Figaro, as well as Reverend Olin Blitch in Susannah. In the summer of 2019, he made his professional debut with the North Shore Music Festival, singing the role of Malatesta in Don Pasquale. Last summer, Bernardo worked for Central City Opera, where he covered and performed his dream role, Rigoletto. This season, Bernardo is working for Indianapolis Opera as a Resident Artist where he will portray the roles of Masetto in Don Giovanni and Jigger Craigin in Carousel.

    David Reck

    David Reck is thrilled to be making his role debut of King Kaspar and his company debut with North Shore. Past productions include creating the role of Stephen Foster in "Voices that are Gone: The Stephen Foster Story"(NYC), John in the premier of "Come Away"(NYC), created the role of Fossi in "Loving Susan"(NYC), Davis in the premier production of "Apartment Haunting"(award winner at the Midtown International Festival)and created the role of Michael in "Jesus Freaks"(Manhattan Rep) based on real life Muppetter Michael Earl. He is a graduate of William Esper Studio where he studied under Bill Esper.

    Daniel Klein

    Daniel Klein has been hailed by the New York Times for his “stentorian bassbaritone” and “unusually dark and steely.” Audiences and critics alike have found his performances imaginative, adventurous, and occasionally even downright terrifying. Recent appearances include Thibaut d’Arc in Maid of Orleans with Opera Company of Middlebury, Caspar in Der Freischutz with Heartbeat Opera, Spencer Coyle in the New York Premier of Benjamin Britten's Owen Wingrave with the Little Opera Theater of New York, Judge Moriarty in the New York Premier of Huang Ruo's Bound, and the title role in Verdi's Falstaff with the International Summer Opera Festival of Morelia, Mexico. Daniel returns to Heartbeat Opera as Don “Donnie” Pizarro in they acclaimed Black Lives Matter Fidelio at the Metropolitan Museum NYC in the fall, and on tour in California and Utah in Spring 2021. Previous roles with OCM include Marcello in La Boheme, Ping in Turandot, Mustafa in Italiana in Algeri and Rambaldo in La Ronnie.

    Leeor Elias

    This is Leeor’s first opera he is a second year students at the Hartt school studying vocal music education. He is a bass. Leeor grew up in the town of Great Neck. He is very excited to be in his first opera and hope’s you enjoy the show.

    Alex Paul Sheerin

    (He/Him ) Stage director and producer Alex Paul Sheerin based in Indianapolis where he is the resident director at Indianapolis Opera. Other credits include Brevard Music Center, North Shore Music Festival, Chicago Summer Opera. Alex is the 2020 National Opera Association Stage Directing Fellow.

  • Music Director and for Conductor 12/18 Performance

    Anthony LaGruth

    American conductor Anthony LaGruth has delighted audiences and critics alike with many exciting performances recognized for their innovative presentation of orchestral music. Roxanne Orgill of the Bergen Record (NJ) observed that, “Mr. LaGruth conducts with subtlety and a refined sense of style that is refreshing.” The Ellsworth American (Maine) noted his “…control, musicianship, and involvement with the music.”, and Michael Greenberg of the San Antonio Express-News said, “Maestro LaGruth brought crisp definition, dramatic sensitivity, and stylishly flexible tempos to the score.” A versatile musician, Mr. LaGruth has shown that he is equally at home leading orchestral, operatic, and choral ensembles. He is currently serving as the Artistic Director and Conductor of the Garden State Philharmonic (NJ) and the Shrewsbury Chorale (NJ).

  • Guest Conductor 12/19 Performance

    Jason Tramm

    Jason Tramm serves as Artistic Director and Principal Conductor with the MidAtlantic Artistic Productions with whom he made his Carnegie Hall (Stern Auditorium) debut in 2015 with his critically acclaimed "A Prayer for Peace" concert. . The second concert of this series took place in 2017 at the NJPAC, and featured Beethoven's Symphony No. 9 with Metropolitan Opera baritone, Mark Delavan. Maestro Tramm is newly named Executive Director of the Light Opera of New Jersey, where he will lead a dynamic company that produces fully staged productions of both opera and musical theater repertoire.

    He has also served as Music Director for an opera tour with performances in Florida, New Hampshire, West Virginia, New York and South Carolina. He served as Artistic Director of the New Jersey State Opera from 2008 to 2012, where he collaborated with some of the finest voices in opera, including Samuel Ramey, Vladimir Galouzine, Angela Brown, Gregg Baker, and Paul Plishka.

  • Pianist

    Kent Dennis

    Kent Dennis is a pianist and music director in NYC. Originally from Oklahoma, he is currently a faculty member at the American Musical and Dramatic Academy (AMDA), an assistant section leader with the New York City Gay Men’s Chorus, and a freelance musician and coach who loves both musical theatre and opera. This is his first production with North Shore Music Festival, but hopefully not his last.

  • Choreographer

    Maggie Golder

    Maggie Golder is a dancer/ choreographer, with degrees in Dance and Psychology from Mount Holyoke College. She has performed in repertory by Pilobolus, Bebe Miller, Bill T. Jones, Vivake Kamsingsavath, Barbie Diewald, and Max Stone. Maggie has presented work at Ballet Inc. Emerging Choreographers Festival (2016), WAXworks (2018), SMUSH Moves (2019), 7MPR (2019), Peridance APEX (2019), and The Craft (2019). She has most recently begun dancing with VashtiDance Theater.

    Through grounded, rhythmic movement Maggie expresses the physical and emotional effects of human interaction, and communicates our constant need for inspection and wonderment. Her work is further influenced by her practices as a musician and psychologist
