In 16th century Mantua, the womanizing Duke, disguised as a student, has enchanted the beautiful, young Gilda, daughter of the jester, Rigoletto. Some noblemen, believing the ever-hidden Gilda to be Rigoletto’s mistress, kidnap her. Upon finding his daughter, Rigoletto swears vengeance upon the Duke, calling the help of the assassin, Sparafucile, and his sister Maddalena, who, seduced by the Duke’s charms, begs her brother to kill another in the Duke’s place. Gilda hears this and sacrifices herself for the man she loves. The opera tragically ends as Rigoletto opens the bag, which he believes contains the Duke’s corpse, to reveal his dying daughter.
