Based on the Dumas novel ” La dame aux camelias”, La Traviata literally means “the wayward woman”.
Originally set in Paris in 1850, the timeless story can be applicable to any period. Violetta, a courtesan, lives off of the generosity of her many admirers. During a party at her lavish home, she meets Alfredo who professes a fervent love for her. Violetta is strangely disturbed by this because, for the first time in her life, she is experiencing true love. Violetta and Alfredo leave Paris for a simpler life in the country far from Violetta’s murky past. Their happiness cannot last, however, as Alfredo’s father, desperate to avoid a scandal, pleads with Violetta to give up his son for good. Although she is deeply in love with Alfredo, she sees that their relationship cannot weather the strict rules of society and his family’s estrangement. She arranges to have Alfredo discover her in the arms of another man knowing it is the only way she will convince Alfredo to leave her.
After a ruthless confrontation back in Paris, the scene changes to Violetta’s home where she is dying from consumption. In the end, she and Alfredo are reunited and she dies in his arms. The performance runs 90 minutes.
