James Baumgardner, tenor, hails from Denver, Colorado but currently resides in New York City. He has been seen with many reputable companies around the Colorado and western regions and is expanding his reputation quickly on the east coast. While in Colorado, James received great acclaim for his portrayal of the Count Almaviva in Opera Theatre of the Rockies’ production of Il barbiere di Siviglia. The show was reviewed by local and state newspapers as being a great success with “a perfect cast, delightfully acted and beautifully sung”. In the western region, James has made leading and supporting role appearances with Opera Colorado, Central City Opera, Opera Fort Collins, and the Longmont Symphony Orchestra. Other past roles for James have included: Alfredo in La Traviata, Don Ottavio in Don Giovanni, Fenton in Falstaff, Sam Kaplan in Street Scene, and the Duke in Rigoletto. In the upcoming year, James will present several new roles for himself including: Tonio in Opera Fort Collins’ production of The Daughter of the Regiment, Belmonte in Delaware Valley Opera’s The Abduction From The Seraglio, and his New York City debut as the Soldier in Opera Moderne’s Der Kaiser von Atlantis.
James’ young artist training in opera has included summers with two of North America’s premier apprentice artist programs. He spent the summers of 2008 and 2009 with Central City Opera’s Studio Artist Program, and in 2009 was awarded with the outstanding studio artist of the year award. In 2010, James was accepted into the very prestigious Santa Fe Opera Apprentice Singer Program. While in Santa Fe, he presented scenes from Adamo’s Little Women and Weill’s Street Scene in the well acclaimed, annual “Apprentice Singer Showcase”. While in Santa Fe, James also covered the role of Nathanael in The Tales of Hoffmann.
James is also an accomplished competition singer and has placed in the Rocky Mountain regional finals for the Metropolitan Opera National Council Auditions, and has also won prizes twice in the Denver Lyric Opera Guild Competition. Recently, he was selected as a finalist for the Arakadai Foundation’s Opera where he sang in the grand finals concert at Merkin Hall in New York City.
James holds his Master of Music degree in Vocal Performance from the University of Colorado – Boulder School of Music and his Bachelor of Music in Music Performance from Colorado State University. While attending these universities, James participated in numerous opera productions, acting workshops, and directed/led a number of opera scenes programs.
